Hirsh, on the left, works as baker. Hard work but very rewarding, making basic food, warm food, for the poor people.
Yankel is a poet. What would be the chance he’d make a living with his poems? But the couple of men have each other, have the bread and the poetry, have their love for each other.
The story is not based on real characters but Im certain they did exist. I was inspired by the images of Tenements (visit the museum when in NY), the stories and by Walt Whitman.
