Spartan soldiers were known to fight together with their male lover. The idea behind was that there’s more motivation and courage when fighting to defend the loved one.
I wrote this poem, then imagined the body, then thought of bringing them together in one painting. But I started with the “ghost” which can be barely seen, from some angles. The body of the Spartan is roughly painted in impasto but what can a screen show, just a bare reflection of reality which in itself is a bare representation in our minds of what is out there. But that’s another story & philosophy, there are others more competent is taking about that.
oil painting
Heavy as the stone he holds
The Spartan falls from his breath
to join the ghost of his beloved.
One Soul, split by the blade
now seeks his other half
in the Silence of the Earth.
40×50cm P&P included
